Husky Energy launches Husky Friends public safety initiative in Duluth and Superior
Integrated energy leader marks anniversary of 2018 explosion with commitment to community
CALGARY, Alberta, April 26, 2022 -- Husky Energy, part of the Cenovus (TSX:CVE)(NYSE:CVE) group of companies, today announced Husky Friends, a public safety initiative designed to protect the communities served by the Superior refinery.
Husky Friends was founded to reach out to the communities of Duluth, MN, and Superior, WI, in advance of the completion of the rebuild of the Superior refinery. The initiative is building connections through person-to-person outreach, direct mail, and a website that gives community members the opportunity to sign up for safety alerts, receive a Neighbor Compassion Kit, and learn about hydrogen fluoride, a chemical commonly used in refining operations.
“The four-year anniversary of 2018’s incendiary incident is the perfect time to renew our commitment to our top value of protecting what matters, and that’s our communities,” said Cenovus CEO Alex Pourbaix. “We understand some residents may have concerns about the Superior Refinery rebuild and its continued use of hydrogen fluoride, but we’ve got a warning system, products, and the scientific facts to say that no matter what happens, your Husky Friends are here for you.”
“It’s so important to keep in mind that the odds of an evacuation event are exceedingly small,” said Kim Guttormson, Manager of Media and Issues Management at Cenovus. “What happened in 2018 was unfortunate, but this time residents can rest easy knowing they’ll be prepared.”
The Refinery has been part of the Superior community for more than 60 years and plans to be an integral member of the city for the decades to come. The Superior Refinery employs almost 200 workers and its more than $25 million annual payroll contributes to economic growth throughout the Superior-Duluth region. When complete, it will be a modernized facility with the same capacity and ability to produce a full slate of products to service the region, including asphalt, gasoline, and diesel.
