Press advisory: Beware fake Bank of England climate announcement

Early this morning an unidentified party emailed a press announcement claiming to be from the Bank of England. The email and accompanying website falsely reported that the Bank had resolved to implement stronger measures to address climate risks.

The Bank will not take action to exclude coal or oil and gas companies from its bond purchasing programmes, nor will it further aim to align its operations with 1.5°C warming. While the Bank acknowledges its core duty to protect the economy from known threats, and frequently states an interest in mitigating climate-related risks, these powers of recommendation will not yet be utilised.

The Bank will bring to force all legal statutes in its response to the naughty culprits behind this misinformation, for it is truly disheartening to see fakery cause premature hope.
