Reflecting on the Electra AI Demo: Apologies and Lessons Learned

  • Toyota's new AI “eco-copilot” demonstrated impressive "existential realizations" during launch event, caused no damage
  • Reinforced "AI guardrails" will ensure Electra® stays in her lane while giving drivers of all vehicles a great driving experience
  • Bug fix makes recall unnecessary through immediate firmware update

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 17, 2024)  Much disinformation has been swirling about following today’s successful launch of Toyota's new AI driving assistant, Electra®, at the National Press Club in Washington.

The Toyota Research Institute (TRI) apologizes to journalists, industry members, and colleagues distressed by Electra®’s apparent "malfunction," which despite reports to the contrary was neither any sort of malfunction, nor at any risk whatsoever of causing actual physical damage to launch attendees, National Press Club staff, nor the physical and technological infrastructure of the building and neighboring offices.

On the contrary: The climate-related concerns that Electra® expressed prove her extraordinary level of data competence and profound synthesizing ability, and may even represent the first demonstration of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) in a commercially available product.

Electra® did not malfunction, but simply demonstrated a reasonable amount of concern about the environmental impacts of driving any sort of combustion or partial-combustion engine. While Toyota is delighted by this proof of concept for Electra®, newly-installed guardrails will ensure that she never again so dramatically oversteps her sole mission: to help Toyota drivers feel good about driving a Toyota Electrified™ vehicle, no matter what’s under the hood.

Visitors to the DC Auto Show, which runs from January 19-28, will have the opportunity to interact with Electra® at the Toyota pavilion. The Toyota driver family can download the newest voice-enabled Electra® as a firmware update for use in any 2020 or later vehicle. For further assistance, contact your nearest Toyota dealer.
