Notes:
One of the most tragic results of this sort of restriction is the failure of mergers.
Example: KLM (sleep, northern-style--normal, efficient, daytime for work, nighttime for sleep), Alitalia (sleep, southern-style--lots of time and lots of enjoyment, saltimbocca romana, wine, friends--all gets in the way of work). merger fails.
Much of the efforts at globalization have come out of a process of peace-seeking--by forging alliances between wealthy, powerful neighbors, the terrors of war can be avoided.
So it's especially poignant, when the small-scale analogues to these large-scale alliances are threatened by local pecularities--in which local customs, legislation, etc. impede the march of commerce.
In such a dynamically unstable environment, there is no way to tell what can happen in regards to the full array of transnational interests, and in consequence to the stability of postwar peace.
Again we have a potential domino effect... which is why we at the WTO are concerned about this as a general, systemic problem.
